"I want Sacramento to be a world-class city known for great arts, but for that to happen,
we have to start thinking bold." — Mayor Kevin Johnson, June 12, 2009

Arts are an integral part of the fabric of the community. They not only provide residents with recreational and entertainment options, but also act as a convener by bringing people together and providing an outlet where ideas and opinions can be expressed in innovative ways. The arts also contribute significantly to economics, quality of life and education.

Purpose

Mayor Johnson launched Sacramento's For Art's Sake initiative in June 2009. The goal is to create a collective vision and direction for arts in Sacramento. He challenged citizens to be bold, work collaboratively and reinvent the way the arts are defined and supported in the community.

The initial objectives, to be achieved by May 2010, are to:

  • establish an arts task force guided by a leadership team that meets monthly.
  • establish five committees that meet monthly: funding, facilities, marketing, arts education and film.
  • research best practices and national models.
  • develop an action plan that builds the case for implementing the propose recommendations.

Need

Today, many of Sacramento's arts organizations are suffering because of the economic climate. Sacramento will be adversely impacted if any of these organizations disappear, which is part of the reason of For Art's Sake.
